The VL832 is a USB-IF Certified USB4 Endpoint device controller with an integrated USB 3.2 USB 20Gbps Hub, a USB 2.0 hub with Multiple Transaction Translators, and a DisplayPort 1.4a output. VL832 provides essential connectivity and an optimized cost structure for peripheral devices such as multi-function adapters and docking stations. In USB4 40Gbps mode, VL832 supports full DisplayPort HBR3 bandwidth (32.4Gbps), and the USB 3.2 hub function supports up to USB 20Gbps operation on its upstream port, enabling multiple USB 10Gbps devices to operate at peak performance on supported host platforms. Both metrics are double what was previously possible using DisplayPort Alternate Mode over USB Type-C (DP Alt Mode), which is limited to 2-lanes of DisplayPort when supporting USB 3.2 functionality. VL832 operates at full performance when used with Thunderbolt™ 4 or USB4 systems and falls back to DP Alt Mode operation when used with legacy platforms.
VL832 utilizes a 10x10x1.03 mm Flip Chip-Chip Scale Package with a 0.5mm ball pitch for ease of manufacturability and small board size. VL832 features five USB downstream ports, with one USB 2.0 port and four USB 10Gbps ports. Two downstream USB 10Gbps ports have an integrated mux for board area savings and improved signal integrity for data-only USB Type-C applications. There are also optionally configurable virtual USB devices for Billboard, HID, or DFU functionality. Secure firmware updates are supported using SHA256 for hashing and ECDSA256 for digital signature verification. VL832 requires an external USB PD controller for upstream and downstream USB Type-C ports. USB Power Delivery’s Extended Power Range (EPR) features can be supported with a capable VL10X Series USB PD Controller, which can also share a single SPI flash with VL832 and offer improved integration without consuming an additional USB port.
