VIA Lab’s VL109 is a highly integrated 3-Port USB Power Delivery 3.1 controller designed for USB-C multi-function docks with charge-through capability. In typical case, these three DRP ports are configured to one charging UFP and two DFPs. Through the charging UFP, VL109 can execute video output functionality by DP Alt-mode or USB4 DP Tunneling, while simultaneously charging the connected PD host once external power is detected. Through the two DRP DFPs, they can either connect to a USB-C power adapter to charge the PD host or link to USB-C devices for data transfer. The UFP and two DFPs all support the latest USB PD 3.1 EPR specification, capable of handling up to 48V at 5A (240W). Either DFP port can charge the host on a first-plug-in, first-serve basis. VL109’s Device Policy Manager can negotiate power rules between its DFP and UFP, enabling power charge-through. Charging a host under dead battery mode and fast role swap are both supported. The USB Billboard device function is included to meet the “VESA DP Alt-Mode on USB Type-C” specification. VL109 also supports a smart auto-standby feature that automatically enters a deep power-saving mode when the connected interface is in an idle state, making it suitable for smartphone and mobile accessories.
With a built-in trimmed RC oscillator, linear voltage regulators, Vbus voltage detectors, and up to 8 channel ADC, VL109 can operate perfectly on Vbus power, monitoring abnormal power behavior and implementing OCP, OCP, and OTP safety protections. Up to 20 GPIO pins are available for specific application usage. The SPI interface can support an external SPI flash or share an SPI flash with VLI Hub/PCON controller for firmware upgrades. The firmware update process can occur through either USB Billboard/Virtual HID or I2C slave interface. VL109, with all CC pins bonded to Rd, is available in QFN 60L (7x7x0.85 mm) which supports three DRP ports, and in QFN 48L (6x6x0.85 mm) which supports two DRP ports. VL109S, with all CC pins floated to Rd, is also available for self-powered applications. Please refer to the Package Top Side Marking section for more details.
